About Kansas City’s Official C.O.B.R.A. Instructor – Miss Tina Richard
What qualifies you to be a selfdefense specialist?
I have completed the C.O.B.R.A. Self-defense education process that has given me access to Chris Sutton’s experience and knowledge as a correction officer and street cop. He has spent one-on-one time with convicted murders and rapists, rehabilitate juvenile delinquents and responded to calls while working the streets. He is an accomplished “Professor” of self-defense and the criminal mind.
As an instructor, I routinely attend conferences and continue my education in the field of self-defense. Continued Education Units or CEUs is a common requirement for certifications in the field of health & wellness. For example, after a personal trainer or group fitness instructor studies hard and passes their certification test they are required to earn CEUs to renew their certification each year. The point is to provide a standard of education and high-quality instructors who are knowledgeable about new developments in their field. Martial arts does not have a governing body to enforce this required. Most martial arts are traditional, so a need to understand the evolving criminal or upgrading their curriculum to current threats is not necessary.
Even though I have 13 years of martial arts training in Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Combatives I take it upon myself to continue my education in self-defense practices and investigate personal protection products and training products. I have, and will continue to participate in active shooter simulations, third party protection, hostage takeover courses and more so I give you the best training.
What qualifies you to teach children?
I have taught children from the ages of 5 and up for the past 6 years. My college education on childhood development & behavior provides a great insight in the developing brain and what teaching techniques work best at certain ages. However, experience working with children is the best learning environment. C.O.B.R.A. Kids Self-defense program allows me to tap into Chris Sutton’s experience in training children with a proven kid specific curriculum. The proof is in the results.
What qualifies you to teach corporations?
My career in team building started while working as a Journeyman Electrician and Foreman. A good Journeyman trains and motivates their apprentices. You develop skills to work with different personalities, to see signs of stress and find ways to alleviate it. Team building makes the job easier and can make it so much more fun.
As I continue to work with corporations it allows me check out their security, especially for potential active shooters. Active shooters at work will most likely be an inside job, either a disgruntle employee or customer. Normal people don’t walk around looking at security flaws. Criminals do. Working with corporate clients allows me to continue to evaluate businesses and customize training to potential threats.
“It made me feel empowered and a lot more confident as a single female.”
